MEMPHIS, Tenn. — EXTREME GRAPHIC VIDEO WARNING: This is the video of Tyre Nichols’ arrest, as released by the City of Memphis. FOX13 is committed to providing transparency of the events surrounding Nichols’ arrest and death. The 29-year-old died at a Memphis hospital three days after this video was taken.
Video of the confrontation between Tyre Nichols and five now-former Memphis Police officers was released by the City of Memphis at 6 p.m. Friday night.
Those five Memphis Police officers have all been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of kidnapping, along with other charges.
The Tenessee Bureau of Investigation said the first encounter between Nichols and the five former officers happened at about 8:22 p.m. Jan. 7 during a traffic stop at the intersection of Raines and Ross roads.
A physical altercation ensued and Nichols ran, the TBI said. A second encounter then took place near Castlegate Lane and Bear Creek Cove. It is believed that is an area close to where he lived with his mother.
That encounter ended with Nichols sustaining critical injuries, according to the TBI.
Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis told FOX13′s Valerie Calhoun that her department has looked at multiple videos taken prior to the physical confrontation between Nichols and officers and had not found “anything to substantiate” the reasons for that traffic stop.
The following is a timeline of police confrontations with Nichols, based on footage released Friday:
The video shows just before 8:25 p.m. Jan. 7 a confrontation with Nichols on the ground. He pulls away and runs toward his family’s home. Six minutes later, an officer catches up with Nichols about a quarter-mile away and takes him down.
At 8:33 p.m., an officer chases down Nichols as his camera falls.
Nichols is heard screaming for his mother over and over.
Later, another officer runs in and kicks Nichols in the face.
One of the videos shows officers surrounding Nichols near an intersection. The officers are seen striking Nichols repeatedly in what the Memphis Police Department called a confrontation during a traffic stop.
It appears that Nichols is handcuffed as the officers are seen hitting and kicking him.
Just after 8:40 p.m., first responders show up.
Officers are overhead on body-cam footage talking about the confrontation.
An officer is heard saying, “I hit that man so many places.”
An officer says in the video that Nichols tried to grab an officer’s gun.
An officer says in the video that Nichols “ain’t got nothing in the car. He ain’t got nothing on him unless he threw it while he ran.”
At 9 p.m,, about 30 minutes after officers caught him and beat him, according to the police footage, a gurney arrives. At 9:02 p.m., the ambulance shows up and Nichols is taken to the hospital.
Nichols died three days later at that hospital.
Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith all were fired Jan. 20, 2023, following an MPD internal employment investigation into their confrontation with Nichols.
