Temperatures at dangerously cold levels in New Hampshire; warm-up coming Sunday
Meteorologist Matt Honig with your storm watch, nine forecast bitter cold temperatures out there this morning. And when you factor in the wind, it could be dangerously cold in parts of the state. Actual air temperatures right now are sitting between 10 below and 25 degrees below zero. The gusty winds will continue for the next several hours but the winds should lighten up *** bit as we head into later this afternoon. Later on this evening in these extreme conditions, you can get frostbite and hypothermia in just *** matter of 5 to 10 minutes. So if you have to be outdoors at any point today, of course, you wanna bundle up just for comfort’s sake. But keep in mind long term exposure with exposed skin could potentially be dangerous. There is *** wind chill warning in effect statewide where the worst of the wind chills are taking place. Now through about nine or 10 o’clock this morning. Here are your actual air temperatures in much of southern New Hampshire. It is 12 below in Newmarket, 13 below and Wyndham and Hollis down to 19 below in Goffstown and Richmond. So you get the idea. It is bitterly cold with readings that are closer to 20 below. In parts of the north country, we’re watching the summit of Mount Washington for *** potential record low temperature there. It is currently 45 below the record we are chasing is 50 below. Alright. So in Congress this morning we have bottomed out at 15 below so far. That makes it the coldest morning Since early January of 2018. So it’s been five years since we’ve had *** temperature this cold. Now, the record low for the day, we’re probably safe. We’re not going to break that. That is 24 below zero. Set back in 1898. Now, of course, the bigger story with this air mass is not just the actual air temperatures, it’s the windchill would, it feels like unexposed skin and in some areas, it is as low as 43 below and conquered in Berlin elsewhere, 35 to 40 below zero. And the summit of Mount Washington currently 107 degrees below zero. It got down to 109 below earlier on this morning. That breaks the record that has been unofficially Set by the mountain of 103° set in 2403 below zero. By the way, this would also unofficially be *** new United States record that is negative 105° and that was set way up north in Alaska. So certainly the home of the world’s worst weather is living up to its name this morning. Our actual temperatures will slowly start to warm up this afternoon. Many of us stay in the single numbers but *** few towns in southern New Hampshire will climb into the teens. And the other good news is that the winds will start to relax later this afternoon into this evening. So here are your windshield values now for the next couple of hours, likely between 20 and 40 below zero, things do improve this afternoon. So at least it’s not quite as dangerous to be outdoors but it will still be uncomfortable with those windchills sitting right around zero. Even this evening, highest risk of frostbite again through most of this morning. That threat really does start to subside this afternoon and this evening and certainly by tomorrow, we will be in much better shape and here’s why it could be *** good 50 degrees warmer tomorrow afternoon than it currently is this morning. High temperatures on Sunday near freezing across the north, mid thirties. Lakes region, Upper Valley were probably closing in on 40 and parts of the Lower Merrimack Valley and along the sea coast, the sunshine we have today, we will trade in for more cloud cover on Sunday, but it should not be nearly as cold even tomorrow morning. I think we’ll start off with temperatures in the single numbers, but it’s *** quick turnaround by midday and early afternoon. Here’s the rest of your seven day sunshine returns for most of us. On Monday, there could be *** few northern flurries or snow showers as our temperatures look to stay warmer than average for most of next week. No major storms in the forecast, there could be *** little bit of rain or wintry mix late Tuesday and then again, late Thursday and Friday. But without any real sustained cold air in place like we have this weekend, we’re looking at more wet than white conditions for the foreseeable future.
