The Bass River State Forest has burned at least 5,000 acres so far since Wednesday night.
The roadway is closed on the Garden State Parkway between exits 38 and 63 in both directions until further notice because of reduced visibility caused by heavy smoke from the wildfire and dense fog.
The Timberline Campground was evacuated with about 40 people in addition to six other homes. There are no structural threats at this moment.
Fire officials say the dry conditions made battling these flames much harder.
People with respiratory issues are advised to keep their windows closed and limit their time outside until the smoke conditions clear.
