  • What To Expect: Severe storms in the Lower Mississippi Valley and along the Gulf Coast.
  • Timing: Through Thursday.
  • Top Concerns: Tornadoes, damaging winds and localized flash flooding.

Severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes, are expected in parts of the South beginning Wednesday, potentially adding to the region’s storm fatigue over the past few months.

This new storm is producing scattered showers and thunderstorms from Texas into other parts of the South right now.

Forecast

Wednesday into Wednesday night is when most of the severe weather is expected.

Severe storms could produce tornadoes and damaging wind gusts from the northern Gulf Coast into the Lower Mississippi and Ohio valleys. Jackson, Mississippi; Memphis, Tennessee; and New Orleans are some of the cities that could see severe storms.

The threat for tornadoes could be in discrete rotating thunderstorms called supercells, as well as embedded with lines of severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. This threat is highest in the darker-shaded areas on the map below.

Localized flash flooding is also possible in many of the same areas at risk for severe weather.

A threat of isolated severe storms could continue into Thursday in southern Alabama, southern Georgia and the Florida Panhandle. Those storms could pose some tornado risk along with spotty damaging wind gusts.

Portions of Indiana and Ohio could also see a few severe storms that produce damaging wind gusts.

It’s possible that another disturbance could reinvigorate the chance of severe weather along a cold front in the Southeast Friday. That would include areas from northern Florida into southern Georgia and southern South Carolina.
